Sie sind Teil des Himalaya und des Karakorum, dem m\u00e4chtigsten und zugleich einem der j\u00fcngsten Faltengebirge unserer Erde.<br \/><br \/><\/p><p><strong>Entstehung<\/strong><br \/>Vor circa 80 Mio. Jahren lag die indische Kontinentalplatte noch etwa 6400km s\u00fcdlich von Asien. Unvorstellbar langsam, mit einer Geschwindigkeit von neun Zentimetern pro Jahr, driftete diese nach Norden und kollidierte schlie\u00dflich vor 40 Mio. Jahren mit dem eurasischen Kontinent. Durch die auftretenden Kr\u00e4fte wurden die Gesteinsschichten gefaltet und der Himalaya herausgehoben. Die h\u00f6chsten Berge entstanden. Diese Plattenbewegung h\u00e4lt bis heute, allerdings mit verminderter Geschwindigkeit, an und l\u00e4sst die Berge wenige Millimeter im Jahr weiter wachsen.<br \/><br \/><\/p><p><strong>Eisriesen der Erde<\/strong><br \/>Insgesamt gibt es vierzehn dieser Eisriesen. Ihre Gipfel gerieten schon sehr fr\u00fch ins Blickfeld von Bergsteigern. Erste Versuche gab es bereits in den fr\u00fchen Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts. Den ber\u00fchmtesten sicher 1924 als George Mallory und Andrew Irvine am Mt. Everest im Nebel verschwanden. Lange Zeit jedoch blieben die Gipfel noch unbezwungen.<br \/><br \/><\/p><p><strong>Erste erfolgreiche Besteigung<\/strong><br \/>Die erste erfolgreiche Besteigung eines Achttausenders gelang erst im Jahr 1950 an der 8091m hohen Annapurna durch die beiden Franzosen Maurice Herzog und Louis Lachenal.
